Drain Fly (Moth Fly)
Psychodidae
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- 1.5 to 5 millimeters (1/16 to 1/4 inch) in length.
Natural Habitat
Damp areas containing nutrient-rich organic material, frequently found in bathroom drains, sewers, kitchen sinks, and compost piles.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the gelatinous organic film (biofilm) and decaying matter found in drains; adults primarily consume nectar or liquid organic matter.
Behavior Patterns
Poor fliers that typically crawl or jump short distances. They are active mostly at night and are attracted to light. Their life cycle from egg to adult takes about 10 to 15 days.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and do not bite or sting. However, they can be a nuisance and have the potential to mechanically transfer bacteria from contaminated sites (drains) to food surfaces. They benefit the ecosystem by breaking down organic sludge.
