Junk bug (Green Lacewing Larva)

Natural Habitat

Gardens, orchards, crops, and various vegetation where prey is abundant.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous; feeds primarily on aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, and other soft-bodied garden pests.

Behavior Patterns

Called 'junk bugs' because they pile the remains of their prey, along with lichen and debris, onto their backs to camouflage themselves from predators and hide from potential prey. They are active hunters that move rapidly.

Risks & Benefits

Highly beneficial to the ecosystem and agriculture as a natural pest control (often called 'aphid lions'). They pose no risk to humans, though they may occasionally deliver a minor, non-venomous pinch if handled.
