Natural Habitat

Moist areas rich in decaying organic matter such as drain pipes, sewers, septic tanks, and damp soil.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on the gelatinous film of algae, bacteria, and fungi (biofilm) that accumulates in drains and moist areas.

Behavior Patterns

They are largely sedentary and live within the slime layer of drains. They breathe through a small tube at their rear that breaks the surface of the water film.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans and do not bite. They can be a nuisance in large numbers and may indicate a clog or cleanliness issue in plumbing. Their presence helps break down organic matter in drains.
