Plaster Bagworm (or Case-bearing Clothes Moth larva)
Phereoeca uterella (or Tinea pellionella)
- Order & Family
- Order: Lepidoptera; Family: Tineidae
- Size
- Case length is about 8-15 mm (0.3-0.6 inches); larva inside is smaller.
Natural Habitat
Typically found inside residential homes, garages, and sheds, often on walls, ceilings, and in corners under furniture.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers such as wool, silk, hair, fur, and spider webs; they can also scavenge on dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
The larva builds a flattened, spindle-shaped case from silk and debris. It can emerge from either end of the case to feed or crawl. They undergo a complete metamorphosis inside this protective silken home.
Risks & Benefits
They are considered a minor domestic pest because they can damage clothing and fabrics made of natural fibers. They do not bite or sting humans and pose no direct health risk.
