Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors in homes, warehouses, and museums; often located in carpets, upholstery, closets, and air ducts.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on natural fibers such as wool, silk, feathers, fur, and hair, as well as dried food products like flour or pet food.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are slow-moving and avoid light. They undergo a complete metamorphosis. They are most active in dark, undisturbed areas where they can feed on organic debris.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause significant damage to household textiles and stored goods. Their bristly hairs may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions (dermatitis) in sensitive individuals. Benefits: In the wild, they act as decomposers by feeding on animal remains.
