Cockroach nymphs
Blattodea (various species)
- Order & Family
- Blattodea, Blattidae/Blattellidae/Blaberidae (depending on species)
- Size
- 3 mm to 20 mm (as nymphs, adult size varies greatly by species)
Natural Habitat
Warm, humid, and dark environments, often indoors in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and areas with food and water sources. They can infest cracks, crevices, and voids.
Diet & Feeding
Opportunistic omnivores, feeding on virtually anything organic, including food scraps, crumbs, grease, decaying matter, book bindings, glue, soap, and even other dead insects. They are known for scavenging.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal, hiding during the day and emerging at night to search for food and water. They are typically gregarious, living in groups. Nymphs undergo several molts (instars) before reaching adulthood. They are agile and can move quickly.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Cockroaches are considered pests. They can contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria (like Salmonella and E. coli), allergens, and pathogens that can cause food poisoning, asthma attacks, and other health issues. They are not known to bite or sting but can cause allergic reactions. Benefits: In certain ecosystems, they can act as decomposers, breaking down organic matter. However, within human dwellings, their risks far outweigh any potential benefits.
