Fruit Fly
Drosophila melanogaster
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Drosophilidae
- Size
- 3 mm to 4 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors near ripened or fermenting fruits and vegetables, or outdoors near gardens and compost piles.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on the sugars found in ripening fruits and vegetables, as well as the yeast and bacteria associated with fermentation.
Behavior Patterns
Fruit flies are known for their rapid reproduction cycle, often going from egg to adult in about 8-10 days. They are most active during the day and are highly attracted to moist, organic matter.
Risks & Benefits
While they do not bite or cause structural damage, fruit flies can be a nuisance and have the potential to contaminate food with bacteria (such as E. coli or Salmonella) they pick up from decaying matter. In science, they are invaluable model organisms for genetic and biological research.
