Natural Habitat
Indoors, they are commonly found in carpets, upholstery, closets, air ducts, and near baseboards. In nature, they are found in bird or rodent nests.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on animal-based natural fibers such as wool, silk, leather, fur, feathers, and lint, as well as dried pet food and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae move slowly and prefer dark, secluded areas. They undergo a lengthy larval stage lasting several months to a year before pupating into adults.
Risks & Benefits
They are a significant household pest that can damage clothing, blankets, and carpets. While they do not bite humans, their bristly hairs can cause 'carpet beetle dermatitis,' an allergic reaction resulting in itchy, red welts on the skin.
