Junk Bug (Green Lacewing Larva)
Family Chrysopidae
- Order & Family
- Neuroptera; Chrysopidae
- Size
- 3mm to 10mm (1/8 to 3/8 inch) in length
Natural Habitat
Gardens, agricultural fields, and deciduous trees/shrubs
Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous; feeds primarily on aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, and mites using hollow mandibles to suck out fluids.
Behavior Patterns
The larva uses curved mandibles to impale prey. It displays a unique 'trash carrying' behavior where it attaches debris, such as dust and the husks of its prey, to its back for camouflage.
Risks & Benefits
Highly beneficial to the ecosystem as a natural pest control (often called 'aphid lions'). They pose no serious risk to humans, though they can occasionally give a tiny, non-venomous 'pinch' if handled.
