Natural Habitat
Typically found in moist, organic-rich environments such as drains, septic tanks, sewer pipes, and wet soil.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on decaying organic matter, sewage, and the gelatinous biofilm that forms inside plumbing fixtures.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae live within the sludge of drains and breathe through a small siphon at the end of their bodies. They undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to adult in about two weeks.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans but can be a nuisance in large numbers. Occasionally, they can transport bacteria from drains to food surfaces, though they are not known as significant disease vectors.
