Springtail (Collembola)

Damp, moist environments high in organic matter, such as soil, leaf litter, compost, decaying wood, potted plants, and occasionally damp indoor areas like bathrooms, sinks, or basements.

Detritivore and fungivore; feeds primarily on decaying organic material, fungi, mold, algae, and bacteria.

Known for their ability to jump using a specialized tail-like appendage called a furcula located on their abdomen. They congregate in large numbers in moist areas and rapidly multiply when humidity and food sources are high.

Benefits: Crucial decomposers that help break down organic matter and enrich soil nutrients. Risks to humans: Completely harmless to humans, pets, and structures. They do not bite, sting, or damage property, though large indoor populations can be a minor nuisance signaling excess moisture or mold.
