- Coleoptera, Dermestidae
- Size
- Larvae typically 2-5 mm in length; adults are usually 2-4 mm.
Natural Habitat
Indoors, particularly in dark, undisturbed areas such as carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, closets, attics, and storage areas. They feed on natural fibers and animal products.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on a variety of animal and plant products, including wool, silk, feathers, leather, fur, dead insects, pet hair, dried meat, and sometimes stored pantry items like cereals.
Behavior Patterns
The larval stage is the most destructive stage, actively feeding on natural fibers and other organic materials. They are often found in secluded areas. Adults are usually found outdoors feeding on pollen and nectar, but can fly indoors to lay eggs. They undergo complete metamorphosis.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include damage to natural fiber textiles, carpets, clothing, and other household items. They do not bite humans or transmit diseases. There are no direct benefits to humans, though they play a minor role in decomposition in natural environments.
