Natural Habitat

Primary habitat is the small intestine of dogs and cats; segments are frequently found on pet bedding, carpets, furniture, or perianal fur.

Diet & Feeding

The adult worm is parasitic and absorbs nutrients from the host's digested food; the detached segment does not feed.

Behavior Patterns

Segments detach from the adult worm and actively crawl out of the host's anus to spread eggs. They contract and expand when fresh, eventually drying out and breaking open.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Indicates a parasitic infection in household pets and the presence of fleas (the intermediate host). While not an insect itself, it signifies a flea infestation. Zoonotic risk to humans is low but possible if an infected flea is ingested (usually by young children).
