Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on the needles of coniferous trees, while the larvae (grubs) live underground and feed on the roots of various plants and trees.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are nocturnal and frequently attracted to porch and street lights. When disturbed, they can produce a distinct hissing sound by rubbing their abdomen against their wing covers (stridulation).
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans. While they can be minor agricultural pests in large numbers as grubs feeding on roots, they are an important food source for birds and small mammals.
