Natural Habitat

Found in western North America, particularly in sandy soil areas, orchards, and coniferous forests.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on the needles of coniferous trees, while the larvae (grubs) live underground and feed on the roots of various plants and trees.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are nocturnal and frequently attracted to porch and street lights. When disturbed, they can produce a distinct hissing sound by rubbing their abdomen against their wing covers (stridulation).

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans. While they can be minor agricultural pests in large numbers as grubs feeding on roots, they are an important food source for birds and small mammals.
