- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae

- 4 to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Moist areas with decaying organic matter, such as bathroom drains, sewers, and septic tanks
Diet & Feeding
Microscopic plants, animals, and decaying organic material located within the gelatinous film of drains
Behavior Patterns
They are primarily nocturnal and stay within the sludge of drains until they pupate and emerge as winged adults. They breathe through a siphon at the end of their bodies.
Risks & Benefits
Directly harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting, but their presence indicates a buildup of organic matter in plumbing. Their decomposition of organic sludge can be considered a minor ecosystem benefit within wastewater systems.
