Western Conifer Seed Bug
Scientific Name: Leptoglossus occidentalis
Order & Family: Order: Hemiptera, Family: Coreidae
Size: 16 to 20 mm (0.6 to 0.8 inches) in length

Natural Habitat
Found in coniferous forests and around residential areas where pine, Douglas-fir, and cedar trees are present; commonly seeks shelter indoors during cold months.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on the developing seeds and cones of coniferous trees by piercing them with a needle-like proboscis and sucking out the nutrients.
Behavior Patterns
They are active flyers and are often found basking in the sun; in late autumn, they aggregate on the walls of buildings to find crevices for overwintering.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite, sting, or carry diseases, and they do not cause structural damage to homes. They are considered a nuisance pest indoors due to a faint pungent odor they release when threatened. In the ecosystem, they can reduce the seed yield of timber trees.
