Natural Habitat
Found exclusively on humans, primarily in the pubic hair region, but can occasionally be found in other coarse body hair like eyelashes, armpits, or chests.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate ectoparasite; feeds exclusively on human blood multiple times a day.
Behavior Patterns
Slow-moving and sedentary; they use specialized claws to grasp coarse hair shafts. They lay eggs (nits) at the base of the hair and have a life cycle of about 30 days. They are primarily transmitted through close physical contact.
Risks & Benefits
Causes intense itching (pruritus) due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. Can lead to secondary skin infections from scratching. They are not known to transmit systemic diseases but are considered a nuisance and a sign of infestation.
