Natural Habitat

Found on humans, specifically living in the seams and folds of clothing/bedding and moving to the skin to feed.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate blood feeders, consuming only human blood multiple times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They spend most of their time on clothing rather than the body. They crawl to the skin only when needed for a meal and lay their eggs (nits) in the seams of fabrics. They cannot fly or jump.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include severe itching (pediculosis), skin rashes, and secondary skin infections. They are unique among lice for being vectors for serious diseases like epidemic typhus, trench fever, and louse-borne relapsing fever. There are no ecological benefits to humans.
