Natural Habitat

Found globally in human dwellings, typically hiding in mattress seams, bed frames, cracks, crevices, and behind furniture/wallpaper.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophagous (blood-eaters), primarily feeding on human blood, though they may bite other mammals or birds.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal parasites that hide during the day and emerge at night to feed. They are attracted to host carbon dioxide and body heat. They progress through five nymphal stages, requiring a blood meal between each molt.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include itchy, red welts from allergic reactions to bites, sleep deprivation, stress, and anxiety. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans. There are no known ecological benefits for humans; they are considered a significant urban pest.
