Natural Habitat
Typically found in urban and domestic environments, especially near ripening or fermenting organic matter like fruits and vegetables.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the yeast and microorganisms associated with decaying or fermenting organic matter; adults feed on liquid from decaying fruit.
Behavior Patterns
Fast-moving flyers that are attracted to light and the smell of fermentation; they undergo holometabolous development (egg, larva, pupa, adult) very rapidly.
Risks & Benefits
Generally considered a nuisance pest in homes; however, they are invaluable model organisms in biological and genetic research. They do not bite but can transfer bacteria from dirty surfaces to food.
