Size: 1.7 mm to 3.5 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Found indoors in homes, warehouses, and museums, as well as outdoors in bird nests, bee nests, and on flowering plants.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar. Larvae feed on natural fibers, animal products, and dried organic materials such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects.

Adults are attracted to light and are often found near windows. The larvae are scavengers that move slowly and search for food in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, under furniture, or inside wall voids.
Risks & Benefits
They are a significant domestic pest that can damage carpets, clothing, and upholstery. Their larval hairs can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis) in sensitive individuals. They serve an ecological role as decomposers of organic matter in nature.
