Natural Habitat
Nests and roosting sites of birds. Can infest homes and other structures when bird hosts are gone.
Diet & Feeding
Blood of birds (ornithonyssus primarily), and occasionally humans or other mammals when primary hosts are unavailable.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal feeders, hide in cracks and crevices during the day. Migrate from nests to new hosts or homes when bird hosts abandon nests or young fledge. Can cause itching and irritation through bites.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include irritating bites on humans, leading to dermatitis, itching, and discomfort. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans. No direct benefits to humans, though they are part of the natural ecosystem in bird nests.
