Reddish-brown Stag Beetle

Deciduous forests, woodlands, parks, and suburban yards, especially near rotting logs and stumps.

Adults feed on tree sap, rotting fruit, and plant juices; larvae (grubs) consume decaying wood and plant matter.

Nocturnal insects attracted to artificial light sources. Males use large mandibles to wrestle rivals for mates. Complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult).

Harmless to humans, though large mandibles can pinch if handled roughly. Highly beneficial decomposers that help break down dead wood into nutrient-rich soil.
