Natural Habitat
Often found indoors in homes, warehouses, and museums, as well as outdoors on flowering plants.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar. Larvae feed on natural fibers, feathers, hair, dried insects, and various animal-based household items.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and are often seen near windows during spring. They undergo complete metamorphosis; the larval stage is the most destructive phase to household goods.
Risks & Benefits
They are a significant pest of carpets, clothing, and museum specimens. While they do not bite humans, larval hairs (hastisetae) can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
