Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on decaying organic matter, slime, and microorganisms found in drains; adults primarily feed on nectar and polluted water.
Behavior Patterns
Poor flyers that crawl or hop; they are most active at night and lay eggs in the gelatinous film that lines drains and pipes.
Risks & Benefits
Non-biting and generally harmless to humans, but can be a nuisance and may mechanistically transfer bacteria from sewage to food surfaces; they help decompose organic sludge.
