Casemaking Clothes Moth (Larva)
Tinea pellionella
- Order & Family
- Order: Lepidoptera, Family: Tineidae
- Size
- Larvae grow up to 10mm (about 3/8 inch); the protective case is usually slightly longer than the larva.
Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, pantries, and under furniture where natural fibers are present.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on keratins found in natural animal fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and lint, as well as some stored dried foods.
Behavior Patterns
The larva spins a silken case around itself, incorporating bits of fiber from its food source. It carries this case with it as it moves and feeds, never leaving it. It pupates inside this same case.
Risks & Benefits
Significant risk to household property as they damage clothing, carpets, and upholstery. No direct health risks to humans (they do not bite or sting), but they are considered a major domestic pest.
