Natural Habitat

Skin of mammalian hosts, particularly the feet, in tropical and subtropical climates.

Diet & Feeding

The female feeds on the blood of the host through a permanent attachment point in the skin.

Behavior Patterns

The female burrows into the epidermis, leaving only a small opening for breathing and defecation, and swells significantly as it produces thousands of eggs.

Risks & Benefits

Causes tungiasis, resulting in pain, inflammation, and secondary infections such as tetanus or gangrene. It provides no ecological benefits to humans.
