Drain Fly Larvae
Psychoda spp.
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- 4 mm to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Commonly found in damp areas with organic buildup, such as sink and shower drains, sewage filters, and compost piles.
Diet & Feeding
Feed on organic matter, sludge, and microfilm (bacteria, fungi, and algae) that accumulates in drain pipes.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae live within the gelatinous film of drains and breathe through a small siphon. They pupate near the surface of the film before emerging as adult flies.
Risks & Benefits
Direct risks to humans are low as they do not bite; however, their presence indicates organic buildup and poor sanitation. They can potentially transport pathogens from sewage to food surfaces.
