Natural Habitat

The scalp and hair of humans, primarily near the ears and the nape of the neck.

Diet & Feeding

Strictly hematophagous; they feed on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are wingless and cannot jump or fly; they move by crawling. They lay eggs (nits) firmly attached to hair shafts near the scalp.

Risks & Benefits

They cause intense itching (pediculosis) and scalp irritation due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. They do not spread disease but can lead to secondary skin infections from scratching.
