Black Carpet Beetle
Attagenus unicolor
- Order & Family
- Coleoptera; Dermestidae
- Size
- 3 mm to 5 mm (Adults)
Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors in dry, dark places like closets, attics, and pantries, as well as outdoors in bird nests or on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, leather, and pet hair; adults primarily feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and often found near windowsills. The damaging holes in fabrics are created by the secretive, slow-moving hairy larvae, not the adults.
Risks & Benefits
They are a common household pest capable of damaging clothing, carpets, and upholstery. While they do not bite or spread disease, their shed larval skins can cause allergic dermatitis in some people.
