Natural Habitat

The scalp and hair of human beings, primarily residing close to the warm skin surface.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate ectoparasite; feeds exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

Wingless and incapable of hopping or flying; they move by crawling. Females lay eggs (nits) glued to the hair shafts near the scalp. They cannot survive for more than 24-48 hours off a human host.

Risks & Benefits

Risk: Causes intense itching (pediculosis) due to allergic reactions to saliva, and potential secondary skin infections from scratching. Benefit: None; they are considered a nuisance pest and a health burden.
