Drain Fly Larvae

Scientific Name: Psychodidae family

Order & Family: Order Diptera, Family Psychodidae

Size: 4mm to 10mm in length

Drain Fly Larvae

Natural Habitat

Damp environments with organic matter, such as drains, sewage pipes, septic tanks, and wet compost.

Diet & Feeding

Organic sludge, decaying vegetable matter, microscopic plants, and animals found in slime films.

Behavior Patterns

The larvae live in the gelatinous film that forms in drains and pipes. They are highly resilient and can survive in low-oxygen environments. They pupate near the surface of the slime before emerging as winged adults.

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite or transmit diseases through direct contact, but they can be a nuisance and may potentially mechanically transfer pathogens from sewage. They are beneficial in small numbers as they help break down organic solids in drainage systems.
