Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera; Family: Dermestidae
Size: Typically 1.7 to 3.5 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors in homes, museums, and storage areas, particularly in dark, undisturbed places like closets, attics, and underneath furniture. Outdoors, they inhabit bird/insect nests.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers and dead animal products (wool, fur, silk, leather, feathers, dead insects, pet dander). Adults feed primarily on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and often found near windowsills. The destructive larvae avoid light and prefer dark crevices where they molt multiple times. They are known to 'play dead' when disturbed.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Larvae are major pests that damage carpets, clothing, upholstery, and taxidermy. The fine hairs on larvae can cause allergic skin reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis). Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of animal remains.
