Fungus Gnats
Sciaridae or Mycetophilidae (familial level, specific species cannot be determined from image)
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera, Families: Sciaridae (dark winged fungus gnats) or Mycetophilidae (fungus gnats)
- Size
- Typically 2-5 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Damp, organic-rich environments, often associated with potted plants, decaying organic matter, compost, or excessive moisture indoors.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae primarily feed on fungi (especially root hairs and organic matter) in moist soil. Adults do not feed or feed on liquids.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are weak fliers and often seen walking on surfaces or flying near infested plants. Larvae live in the top layers of soil. They have a short lifespan, typically a week for adults, and reproduce rapidly in suitable conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can be a nuisance indoors. Larvae can damage roots of seedlings and young plants, especially in greenhouses or potted plants, leading to stunted growth or plant death in severe infestations. They do not bite humans or transmit diseases. Benefits: In natural environments, they contribute to decomposition of organic matter.
