Webbing Clothes Moth (Larvae/Webbing)
Tineola bisselliella
- Order & Family
- Order: Lepidoptera; Family: Tineidae
- Size
- Larvae grow to approx. 10-12 mm (0.5 inches); Adults are 5-8 mm in length with a wingspan of about 12 mm.
Natural Habitat
Indoor environments protected from light, such as dark closets, drawers, attics, and underneath carpets or furniture; specifically found on natural fabrics.
Diet & Feeding
Strictly natural fibers containing keratin, such as wool, cashmere, fur, silk, feathers, and felt; they also consume accumulated pet hair and lint.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae spin silken tubes or tunnels (often incorporating fecal pellets and fiber debris, as seen in the image) across the surface of materials to protect themselves while feeding; they stay hidden in dark areas and avoid light.
Risks & Benefits
Considered a major household pest; the larvae cause irreversible damage to expensive clothing, rugs, tapestries, and upholstery by eating holes in the fabric; they pose no direct health threat to humans (do not bite or sting).
