Fruit fly larva
Drosophila melanogaster
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Drosophilidae
- Size
- 3 to 4 mm in length as mature larvae before pupation.
Natural Habitat
Typically found in kitchens near overripe fruit, or in moist areas where organic matter decays, such as drains or compost bins.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on fungi (yeast) and bacteria growing on decaying organic matter, especially fermenting fruits and vegetables.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae go through three stages (instars) of development, tunneling through their food source while eating. They generally move away from moist food to a drier surface to pupate.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite and are not hazardous to health in small numbers, but they are a nuisance and can contaminate food. In science, they are highly beneficial as primary model organisms for genetic research.
