Natural Habitat
Often found indoors in humid areas like bathrooms and kitchens, or in stored paper products, books, cardboard, and grains. Outside, they live in bird nests, under bark, and on leaves.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on molds, fungi, grains, insect fragments, pollen, and starchy materials like book binding glue or wallpaper paste.
Behavior Patterns
They are attracted to high humidity which promotes mold growth (their primary food source). They do not bite but run rapidly when disturbed. They reproduce asexually (parthenogenesis) in many species.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Harmless to humans (do not bite or transmit disease) but can be a nuisance pest and contaminate stored grains or fragile books/papers. Benefits: In nature, they help recycle organic material.
