Spotted Lanternfly (Early Stage Nymph)

Size: Approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch (first through third instar nymphs).

Natural Habitat
Found in wooded areas, orchards, gardens, and residential landscapes, particularly near their preferred host plant, the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima).
Diet & Feeding
Polyphagous planthopper that feeds on plant sap from over 70 different plant species including fruit trees, grapevines, and hardwoods.
Behavior Patterns
Nymphs hatch in spring and pass through four stages (instars); the first three are black with white spots. They are strong jumpers and move upward on plants to feed on tender new growth. They excrete 'honeydew', a sticky substance that promotes mold growth.
Risks & Benefits
Major invasive pest with no known benefits to the ecosystem in North America. They cause significant economic damage to agriculture and timber industries. Residents should report sightings and destroy the insect to help control its spread.
