Drain fly larva
Psychodidae (family)
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- 3 to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found in moist areas with organic decomposition, such as sink drains, sewers, septic tanks, and wet soil.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on sludge, decaying organic matter, bacteria, and fungi found in gelatinous biofilms.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae live within the slime or film of drains; they have a breathing tube that allows them to survive in semi-liquid environments. They pupate near the surface of the organic film.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans but can be a nuisance and signal a hygiene issue or clog. In small numbers, they help break down organic solids in sewage, but they can carry bacteria from the sludge they inhabit.
