- Order Coleoptera, Family Dermestidae
- Size
- 1 mm to 5 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found indoors in carpets, wool rugs, upholstered furniture, closets, and structural voids where organic debris collects.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on dry animal and plant products, including wool, silk, fur, feathers, pet hair, dead insects, and dried food items.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They have a slow developmental cycle often lasting a year before pupating into adult beetles. They shed their skins multiple times, which are often found before the larvae themselves.
Risks & Benefits
Considered a significant household pest as they can damage natural fiber textiles. Their stiff hairs (setae) can cause localized skin irritation or allergic reactions in humans, known as carpet beetle dermatitis.
