Natural Habitat

Found in moist areas with organic buildup, such as bathroom drains, sewers, and kitchens.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on the gelatinous organic film (biofilm) in drains; adults feed on liquid carbohydrates and water.

Behavior Patterns

They are weak fliers that often crawl or take short, hopping flights. They are most active at night and are frequently seen resting on walls near plumbing fixtures.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered a nuisance pest but do not bite or transmit diseases to humans. They are beneficial in the sense that their larvae help break down organic matter in sewage systems.
