Carpet Beetle Larva (Hairs/Skin Cast)
Anthrenus verbasci
- Order & Family
- Coleoptera: Dermestidae
- Size
- 1mm to 4mm in length
Natural Habitat
Indoor environments, specifically within carpets, upholstered furniture, closets, and baseboards where organic debris accumulates.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on dry animal products including wool, silk, feathers, fur, pet hair, and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas and undergo several molts, leaving behind translucent, bristly 'skins' like the one pictured. They are slow-moving and can survive for long periods without food.
Risks & Benefits
They are a common household pest that can damage natural fiber fabrics and stored goods. While they do not bite, the barbed hairs (hastisetae) on the larvae can cause skin irritation or 'carpet beetle dermatitis' in sensitive individuals.
