Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors in carpets, upholstery, closets, and museum collections where natural fibers are present.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on animal-based materials such as wool, silk, feathers, fur, pet hair, and dried skin or insect remains.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are largely cryptic and avoid light, often crawling into dark crevices or deep into fabric piles to feed. They undergo a complete metamorphosis with long larval stages.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause significant damage to household fabrics and clothing. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions (dermatitis) from contact with the larval hairs. Benefits: In the wild, they act as decomposers by breaking down organic matter like dried animal remains.
