The adult insect feeds exclusively on human blood; eggs are non-feeding remains or casings.
Behavior Patterns
Nits are glued to hair shafts or fibers; they cannot jump or fly. They hatch within 7-10 days into nymphs that require blood meals to survive.
Risks & Benefits
Causes intense itching and scalp irritation. Not known to spread disease, but heavy infestations can lead to secondary skin infections from scratching.
