Natural Habitat

Found in bird nests (pigeons, starlings, sparrows) and poultry houses; often enters homes through windows or vents after birds leave the nest.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophages; they feed on the blood of birds, but will bite humans and other mammals if their primary host is unavailable.

Behavior Patterns

Highly mobile and active at night; they have a rapid life cycle (approx. 7 days) and can survive for several weeks without a host.

Risks & Benefits

They do not live or reproduce on humans, but their bites cause intense itching, skin irritation, and dermatitis; they are considered a household nuisance and a veterinary pest.
