Natural Habitat

Indoors in dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, under furniture, or in storage bins; worldwide distribution.

Diet & Feeding

Keratin-rich animal fibers including wool, fur, hair, feathers, silk, and felt; occasionally feeds on spices or tobacco.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae construct a portable silken case incorporating fibers and debris from their food source. They live inside this case and pull their head and legs out to feed or move. As they grow, they enlarge the case without ever leaving it.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Significant pest that causes permanent damage to clothing, upholstery, rugs, and heirlooms. It has no known benefits to humans or indoor ecosystems.
