Merchant grain beetle

Natural Habitat

Grain processing facilities, grocery stores, and household pantries, specifically in cereal and chocolate storage areas.

Diet & Feeding

Broadly feeds on processed cereals, oats, pasta, dried fruits, nuts, and chocolate. Unlike the closely related Sawtoothed Grain Beetle, this species prefers oil-bearing seeds and nuts.

Behavior Patterns

They are highly active and can fly. They often enter packaged food through tiny gaps. Their life cycle from egg to adult takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks under warm conditions.

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite or sting and pose no direct physical harm to humans. However, they are significant pantry pests that cause food spoilage and economic loss by contaminating stored food items with feces and shed skins.
