Casemaking Clothes Moth Larva
Tinea pellionella
- Order & Family
- Lepidoptera: Tineidae
- Size
- Larvae are roughly 7mm to 10mm (about 1/4 to 3/8 inch) long.
Natural Habitat
Indoor environments, particularly in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, attics, and under furniture where natural fibers are found.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on keratin-rich natural fibers such as wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and animal hair. They may also eat lint, dust, and food scraps with protein.
Behavior Patterns
The larva spins a protective silken case around itself, incorporating fibers and debris from its environment for camouflage. It carries this case as it moves and feeds. When ready to pupate, it finds a sheltered spot and seals the case.
Risks & Benefits
Considered a household pest because they can cause significant damage to expensive clothing, rugs, upholstery, and stored fabrics. They pose no direct physical threat to humans or pets (they do not bite or sting).
