Springtail (specifically an Elongate-bodied Springtail)
Scientific Name: Order: Collembola (likely family Entomobryidae or Isotomidae)
Order & Family: Order: Collembola / Family: Various (e.g., Entomobryidae)
Size: Very small, typically 1/16 to 1/8 inch (1-3 mm) in length.

Natural Habitat
They thrive in damp, moist environments. Indoors, they are often found in bathrooms, basements, kitchens near sinks, or in soil of potted plants. Outdoors, they live in leaf litter, soil, and decaying wood.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on decaying organic matter, fungi, mold, bacteria, and algae. They are essentially nature's recyclers.
Behavior Patterns
Springtails are named for their ability to jump using a tail-like structure called a furcula tucked under their abdomen. When disturbed, they release this spring to fling themselves into the air. They do not fly. They tend to gather in large numbers where moisture is high.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Virtually harmless to humans and pets; they do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases. They can be a nuisance in large numbers inside the home. Benefits: They are beneficial for soil ecology as they help decompose organic matter and cycle nutrients.
