Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors in dark, quiet areas such as closets, under furniture, or within carpets and upholstery containing natural fibers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on keratins found in animal products including wool, silk, hair, feathers, and fur. They can also graze on synthetic fibers if blended with natural ones.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae construct a portable silken case incorporating fibers from the materials they feed on. They undergo 5-45 molts depending on conditions, eventually pupating inside the same case.
Risks & Benefits
They are a significant household pest that can cause irreparable damage to clothing, blankets, rugs, and historical textile collections. They provide no significant benefits to human environments.
